Exploring the Historic Kellogg House: Ghost Stories, History, and Victorian Vibes

First Impressions / Arrival

We met up with our friend Emily for a long-awaited visit to the Historic Kellogg House in Santa Ana. She had been telling us about this place for a while and recommended the Haunted OC tour led by Darcy Staniforth (instagram.com/darcystaniforth). It was our first visit and we could not wait to see what the night had in store.

Honoring Local Land and Tribe

Before the tour began we participated in a land acknowledgment ceremony to honor the local tribe that once inhabited the area. It set a quiet reflective tone for the evening.

Kellogg Family and Queen Anne Architecture

During the tour we learned about the Kellogg family of gardening fame not to be confused with the cereal Kelloggs. The house is a beautiful Queen Anne Victorian home built by Hiram Clay Kellogg for his wife Helen Kellogg. Hiram, a civil engineer and architect, shaped much of Southern California’s infrastructure, designing roads, bridges, and irrigation systems that helped develop major areas in Orange County. Helen, as the matriarch, was a remarkable presence and an important part of the household legacy.

The tour was hosted in collaboration with the Heritage Museum of Orange County (instagram.com/heritagemusoc) and is part of the Haunted OC program (hauntedoc.com, @hauntedorangecounty).

Victorian Guide and Paranormal Stories

Our guide Darcy was dressed in traditional Victorian mourning garb which added a hauntingly authentic touch to the experience. As we explored the house we heard stories of paranormal activity including a man in a bowler hat, children, and possibly Helen herself. The stories gave the night a spooky but calm vibe and invited curiosity rather than fear.

Reflection on the Experience

This tour is perfect for anyone looking for a paranormal experience rooted in history. It balances eerie tales with the real life of the Kellogg family and the charm of their Queen Anne home. We left feeling like we had glimpsed a piece of the past and had a gentle brush with the unexplained.
